Outdoor Activity – Adult Education Classes
Preparing for a Long Distance Hike:
Tuesday October 18-November 22 6:30-8:30PM 6 weeks
offered through Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
Are you ready to hike the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail or the Continental Divide Trail? This is a hands-on class, presented by a woman who has hiked all three with her hound dog (and many shorter trails of 200+ miles). You will be putting up tents, cooking and playing with gear. We will have discussions on “leave no trace” ethics, guides, maps, hygiene, gear (stoves, packs, tents, tarps), gear weight, hiking partners, hiking with a dog, clothing, helpful websites, safety concerns and our last class is a backcountry cook off. You be going outside, so be ready for the elements with warm waterproof clothing and headlamps. Be ready with your pack and gear for a weigh in and analysis. We will also discuss signing up for hikes, overnight trips, or maybe a group AT starting in April.
Fall Hiking
Sundays 12:30 PM- 3:30 PM October 16- November 20 6 weeks
offered through Five Town CSD Adult & Community Education
Hiking is a great way to meet other active people and in fall the weather is cool, perfect for hiking. The trails we will take are the best of Maine stuff- beautiful moss, roots and rocks, short steep climbs, delightful ocean views. These three-hour hikes will be at a moderate pace with two breaks. The group will meet at different trailheads in the Camden Hills area. You must be healthy and able to engage strenuous physical activity. The best day to hike during hunting season is Sunday, if you don’t look great in orange. Come to the Thursday, October 13 evening class What’s in Your Day Pack or call to receive an email with day pack hints. Limit 12 adults.
What’s in Your Day Pack:

The weather has changed, what’s in your pack now? What if your day hike turns to sleet? Are you ready? This will be a thoughtful discussion on what to bring hiking. Bring in your pack and share why you have the items in it. I’ll show you mine you show me yours. This class is also a primer for the Sunday hike series beginning on October 16.
